Many people in local villages live off the land. For subsistence, bush meat is common. Fair-trade cacao beans are farmed and cassava is a staple part of the daily diet which is supplemented by chickens and fish caught fresh from the River Ngyong.
Hundreds of thousands of prepupal Saturniidae larvae are farmed & harvested each year as a sustainable, high protein, food source - it is a significant part of our diet.
48% of the land area of Cameroon is forested (30 Million Hectares) – 47% of this is 'managed, protected' forest.
BUT..........The forest is disappearing……..Current rate of loss is 1%/year but that is increasing at a rate of 10%/year on average.
The time to act is now….what we are setting out to achieve is time-sensitive and potentially clonable to other parts of Africa or even other parts of the world where:
Biodiversity is high, but challenged by resource mining/stripping and;
Sustainable, locally suitable businesses are desperately needed for maximum impact and;
Education and a global voice is critical
But we need help -
we cannot do this on our own - we are dedicated to this cause - the impact of what we are doing is not simply local - it is of global importance.
Please consider donating. All donated funds go to the project.
Cameroon Ark is set-up as a not-for profit organization in Cameroon.
It is supported by a network of enthusiastic volunteers who are passionate about their forest and their country as well as experts and advisors globally who are passionate about the natural world.
The Cameroon Ark project has been adopted in the UK buy a UK-registered charity called Kingdom Impact Today, focused on making positive changes in Africa.
